The course & your visit
Port Augusta: the Crossroads club
Port Augusta Golf Club plays eighteen fully grassed holes at Hamilton Road, Port Augusta West — par 70 over 5,757 metres, with panoramic Flinders Ranges views the club trades on. Its own nickname is the Crossroads of Australia and the Gateway to the Outback. A members’ club staffed entirely by volunteers, it welcomes visitors and handicapped competition guests daily from 8am to 4pm.

Kikuyu, Santa Ana and 24 bunkers
Wide kikuyu fairways with couch patches run through saltbush clusters and short tree lines — the rough is soft red sand and dirt — to medium-to-large Santa Ana couch greens ringed by couch-kikuyu surrounds. Twenty-four bunkers guard most holes. The four par threes run 146 to 165 metres, twelve par fours 312 to 408, and two par fives: the straight 513-metre second and the 451-metre seventeenth, doglegging 45 degrees from 200 metres out.
The venue’s own highlights reel names the 147-metre third with four pot bunkers, the deep-faced fourth, the five-bunkered downhill tenth, the knolled sixteenth and the uphill-finishing eighteenth.

1926, recess, rebirth, grass
The club was formed on 1 July 1926 under Dr Symons, playing nine holes six kilometres east of town — a gum-tree line is all that remains — with associates competing from 1938 on donated Boully cups. War brought recess in 1941; on 19 May 1950 seventeen men met at the Institute Hall and reformed it on council parklands at Port Augusta West, play starting in 1951 with the old clubhouse carted across — it still stands as the Pidgeon Club.
Eighteen holes by August 1958 sat partly on flood-prone clay, so 1969 plans and Mortlock Estate land built the all-weather course with more than 5,000 planted trees and a clubhouse opened 8 May 1971 above the Ranges view. Effluent water from 1980 grassed the fairways by 1984 and all eighteen greens by 1991 — the full-grass country course of today.

Competitions and the Classic
Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday competitions take names on the official start sheet with a ten-minute starter call — phone 8642 2930 if delayed. Non-member and member-guest green fees cover nine or eighteen holes with under-18s half price, plus limited club hire and carts for hire. The bar opens Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Friday evenings.
The premier week is the Elders Port Augusta Golf Classic, 4 to 8 August 2026 — running 51 years on hospitality and course quality, in the chair’s words. Twilight golf, junior golf, a chipping-and-putting competition and reciprocal clubs fill out the program.
