Aston Hills: two clubs, one Mount Barker home
Aston Hills Golf Club at 435 Bald Hills Road, Mount Barker, is the 2017 rebrand of the Mount Barker-Hahndorf club — itself a 2007 reunion of two pioneering Adelaide Hills clubs — now partnered with the neighbouring Aston Hills housing development. The course is eighteen holes among majestic gum trees with gently undulating couch fairways, ponds and bunkers, and native wildlife grazing nearby. The club’s own line is that this is the only Adelaide Hills course without any hills.

The course and practice ground
The playing character runs from testing par threes to long par fives, with strategically placed ponds and bunkers shaping each hole. Practice covers a fairway for shots up to 180 metres plus chipping and putting greens, with range balls bought at the pro shop. Club professional Ben Traeger — 2022 SA Club Professional of the Year — leads the golf operation alongside club manager Brad Ashby.
Dress is collared shirts and tailored shorts or trousers, with neat jeans explicitly allowed and sport shoes acceptable if they won’t damage the surfaces. Players carry sand buckets and fill divots. Alcohol rules are worth knowing: only club-purchased drinks may be consumed, but they may be taken onto the course as well as the clubrooms.

Visiting and handicaps
Green-fee golf covers adults, juniors, members’ guests, seniors (card required, weekdays only) and flexi members over nine or eighteen holes, with half-day shotgun starts and full exclusive course hire bookable through the club on (08) 8391 0547. From January 2027 the schedule adds weekend and public-holiday pricing plus a twilight rate — after 2pm in winter, 4pm in summer. Veterans’ association days run through the same booking line.
New golfers get unusual practical help: the site explains handicapping step by step — three eighteen-hole stroke rounds with a handicapped member, playable as nine-hole blocks, usually starting at a 45 handicap — and points to the R&A rules app. Junior membership is described as the fastest-growing category.

1907, 2007, 2017: a twice-joined history
Mount Barker District Golf Club (recognised 1906) first joined Hahndorf in April 1907, winning its first recorded competitive match that September against McLaren Vale at Dunn’s Laurels property. The clubs separated in 1912; Mount Barker spent 45 years on the Wardens’ Wellington Road property — Commander Warden’s putter still hangs in the clubhouse — bought 288 acres at Wistow in 1966 and built it almost entirely with volunteer labour, then moved to the current water-blessed site in 1981. Hahndorf, sustained by the Nitschke family’s land from 1963, expanded to eighteen in 1981 and celebrated its centenary in 1992.
The 2007 reunion brought the histories back together, and the 2017 Aston Hills partnership — developer payments plus complimentary memberships for new home buyers — funded the modern era. The club counts 145 years of continuous operation across the two lineages, with 180-degree Hills views from the clubhouse and a first pro-am in more than thirty years among its recent milestones.

Clubhouse and bistro
The clubhouse bistro serves lunch with Hills produce plus counter coffee and bites, open to the public with views over the Mount Barker course. Events, women’s golf, juniors and member resources run through the site, and the venue takes functions against the same backdrop.
