The course & your visit
Echunga: two nines, volunteer-built
Echunga is a public eighteen in the Adelaide Hills, fully watered across gently undulating ground. Its two nines have different characters and different birthdays: the flatter back nine was the original course, while the mildly undulating front nine — big gum trees the main feature — arrived in 1995. Some 520 members and counting, a debt-free clubhouse since 1997, and a biodiversity program with photo-monitoring points make this a club that builds things itself.

The two nines
The men play par 70, the women par 71, over a layout the club calls a stern test with a wide variety of holes — and the layout page carries individual hole links plus a temporary nineteenth, evidence the course keeps evolving. Water security underpins it all: buying the neighbouring property locked in a permanent supply that keeps the course fully watered through summer, a point the club’s pages stress.
The native setting is the backdrop visitors remark on: large gums dotted across both nines in an Australian bushland frame. The biodiversity pages show the work behind the scenery — professional bushcarers and club volunteers digging out Harlequin Flower and Sweet Vernal to protect native lilies and orchids, 200 Trees for Life seedlings planted in a day, and a photo-monitoring point tracking the patches.

Playing as a visitor
Green-fee players are welcome outside club competition times — including Saturday afternoons after 1pm — with the proviso that large bookings and special events can close the course, so calling ahead on 08 8388 8038 or using the booking form is encouraged. Every competition is open to any golfer with an official GolfLink handicap. Seniors and concession weekday rates, junior rates and an after-4pm daily rate exist alongside the standard eighteen and nine-hole fees.
Electric carts, hire clubs with pull buggies, and buggies alone are all available under a published cart-hire policy. A hole-in-one jackpot on any par three adds a small thrill to the short holes — check the current total on the club’s notice before teeing off.
