The course & your visit
Kapunda: from slag scrapes to showpiece
Kapunda Golf Club on Hancock Road is a nine-hole layout with eighteen tee blocks in scenic countryside — which the club puts 75 kilometres from Adelaide, beside Australia’s oldest mining town. The course is fully volunteer-maintained, and visitor comments quoted on the site call it possibly the best-presented nine-hole greens course in the state. Its story runs from a Kidman paddock through slag scrapes to a 2006 SA Great Regional Sports Award.

Three grounds in seventy years
The club started in the mid-1950s on Bethel Road, moved to Allendale until the mid-60s, then saw Kapunda District Council acquire its present site as a bare paddock from S. Kidman & Co in 1965. Through 1966 the committee designed and built fairways, laid slag scrapes, raised an iron-shed clubhouse and planted hundreds of native trees to define the holes — competitions shifted to the new course in 1967, and a brick clubhouse borrowed through the council followed in 1977.
The transformation came in 2001: with the council, the club replaced scrapes with bent greens and irrigated the fairways from town effluent and stormwater, mostly on volunteer labour — trimming some original trees for sunlight, planting others to keep the challenge. Lengthening the eighteenth to a par four set the par-73 layout, and the redevelopment plus club management won the 2006 state regional sports award. Extra bunkers and taller trees have sharpened it since.
