The course & your visit
Tanunda Pines: golf and wine at Rowland Flat
Tanunda Pines Golf Club plays a par-72 championship eighteen at 39 Pioneer Avenue, Rowland Flat — an hour from Adelaide by the club’s figure, beside the Novotel Barossa Valley Resort. Century-old gums, rolling fairways, native birdlife and views over Jacob’s Creek and St Hallett vineyards frame the round. The venue publishes a playing guide for every hole, opens to the public seven days subject to availability, and traces its records to 1913.

Eighteen holes, narrated
The published tour is the round’s companion. The second plays from an elevated tee with Barossa Ranges views to a fenceline green inviting bump-and-run imagination; the tenth is a double-dogleg par five where back pins run over a mound known locally as Mt Albert; the twelfth, rated the hardest, climbs two hills to an elongated two-tier green. The fourteenth’s hilltop green looks across the ranges to the coast on clear days — take extra clubs.
The finish pairs the index-one seventeenth, a long downhill approach to a quick front-to-back green after the dogleg climb, with a gettable par-five eighteenth down a tree chute to a wedge third — birdie, the guide says, then the veranda for drinks. The thirteenth’s drop tee among the gums, staring across vineyards, may be the prettiest shot of the day.

1913 to Balmoral
The earliest record dates the course to 1913; it has changed names, ownership and locations repeatedly since, on its Rowland Flat site since 1939. The greenkeepers’ lunchroom by the fifth tee was the original clubhouse — extended in 1958 with a Cyclone prefab shed — which hosted the 1979 first Pro-Am where Wayne Grady beat Ian Baker-Finch and gave his speech in the old room. A late-90s deal with the Novotel developer built the current clubhouse and re-routed the course.
Financial trouble sold the member-owned club to Seven Under Pty Ltd in 2003 — seven families who renamed it Tanunda Pines and held it nineteen years — before Balmoral Resort Australia bought it in October 2022 with a long-term capital works plan the club says has never left the future brighter.
