The course & your visit
McCracken: lakes, bunkers and valley views
McCracken — the Country Club of our listing, the Golf Club of its own site — sits at Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu, which the club puts an hour from Adelaide. Tony Cashmore’s championship par 72 is a links-and-lakes layout with coastal breezes, elevated fairways, fourteen lakes and heavy bunkering, looking over the Hindmarsh Valley. The venue publishes playing notes for every hole, and the course is open to the public seven days a week.

Water everywhere, and a valley of sin
The published notes read as a water-management manual. The first asks for a layup left with water both sides for long hitters; the index-one third runs water all down the right with the safe line a fairway wood to the left centre; the thirteenth demands carrying the water or losing the ball; and the eighteenth allows only one safe second shot — a layup to the centre. The eighth tees left of an olive tree to a hill crest, and the fourteenth borrows St Andrews language with a ‘valley of sin’ short of the green that makes an extra club compulsory.
Tiered and sloping greens recur throughout — a three-tier fourth where the wrong level means putting disaster, a deep swale through the second, a prominent rise in the middle of the tenth. The consistent advice is to check the daily tee position and wind before choosing a club, and to favour the safe side of every pin.

Bookings, competitions and twilight
Tee times run online, through the pro shop on 08 8551 0299, or by email, with weekday and weekend green-fee rates and member-guest discounts — plus cart and club hire and a seven-day driving range needing no booking. Men compete Wednesdays and Saturdays (visitors welcome Saturday mornings with member preference to 11am), women on Thursdays, and a twilight competition runs through daylight saving from 3 to 5:30pm. Vacant competition times within three days go to resort guests and green-fee players, and guests need a current GolfLink number.

The On Course pro shop
The pro shop belongs to the On Course Golf Group and is managed by Billy Minns, an Australian PGA member since 1991 who spent twenty years as manager and head professional at Broome Golf Club before joining McCracken in June 2024. Lessons run by appointment in his blend of old-school and new methods, and the shop handles tee times and merchandise alongside tuition.
